Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems the dreamers of Sheppey have a thing about bridges. Obviously this would be no surprise; life on the island depends on them for connection to the mainland.
In winter-art-5210’s dream, one part of the dream has a bridge made of a “kind of woven material..like a tapestry or something.” It seems the bridge supporting the bag-laden walkers is not a “road bridge” after all, but much more flexible.
This feeling of a bridge made of something woven immediately invoked in me a feeling of grappling along on a rope bridge…an old fear, probably borne of seeing the Indiana Jones scene too many times as a child.
Has anyone been to the Carrick-a-Rede? I’m terrified and intrigued.
I remember this haunting PJ Harvey/John Parish song, Rope Bridge Crossing, which also captures an uncertainty: “Now I’m treading very carefully/And I hope that I don’t scream/And I hope that I don’t fall/Off your bridge, crossing over…”. Amazingly there is also this lyric: “‘Hold on’ the dream says”!
Dreams are always pulling this kind of stuff on us, aren’t they? – making uncertain things which we especially want to be certain. Bridges…relationships…
